advanced slug-bug

My kids have been playing this very advanced version of slug-bug lately.  It involves several different types of cars and can be a bit complex, however even Ethan has managed to master it.  Here are the rules::

Anything made by Volkswagen (with the exception of the actual Beetle, either new or old version) simply shout the color of the car and punch the nearest sibling.  For example should you see a silver Jetta driving toward you- “silver one!” and punch.

Either a PT Cruiser or a HHR is considered a Jitterbug.  No punching involved, just finding them, being the first to call it out and racking up points.  Once you start this it’s amazing how many people you will see that drive one of these kind of cars.

We had to lay down some ground rules here.  There are two car dealers near our house and they each have several PTs and HHRs.  My punks were calling them before we even got close enough to see the cars and then, of course, the fighting would begin.  New rule:  dealerships don’t count.

Plain old slug-bug.  Old rules still apply.

Convertie-Hurtie.  This is like slug-bug but with any type of convertible vehicle.  The kids haven’t figured out that you are still supposed to do the punching (hence the “hurtie”), and I am not telling them otherwise.  Call them out and collect points.

Woody Whomp.  You know those cars with the fake wood panels on the side?  Those are woody whomps.  Again the kids don’t get the whomp part, and so there is no hitting involved, points only.

Complex, no?

This morning after we dropped the kids off at school Ethan and I were on our way home.  He saw a red beetle and shouted the following:

“Slug bug, red one…hurry up and punch me!”

And the first words out of Ethan’s mouth this morning when he woke up (which I only know about because I was in his bed sleeping too, which is a whole other story):
”convertie hurtie".”  What sort of dreams is he having?
